How to Start a Blog – Ultimate Step-by-step Beginners Guide

Why should you start a blog?

Top 5 reasons why you should start a blogging business

Starting a blog might seem like a thing that is too complicated or too much to handle. But trust me, it is pure fun and the earning potential is mind-blowing with so little investment. It’s a no-brainer to start a blogging business, like today.

When I was just starting out, things felt a bit overwhelming but after years of doing it and making money online (pretty quickly may I add). I’m more than happy that I started my blogging business as I know there are limitless opportunities in the blogging world.

What I also wanted to emphasize is that I’m not special or unique in any way. I’m just like you. There are a massive amount of people starting online businesses all the time. There’s a specific formula for creating and growing your blog to massive success.

There are reasons for people jumping in the flow, and these are just some of them.

1. Limitless earning potential

As you are building your blog, you are building it for the countless of people around you. Blogging enables you to do that. Your blogging business is not fixed to any certain place like the old-fashioned brick and mortar stores are.

With that in mind, think about the earning potential you have. Like, honestly there’s no limits to it. You can earn money as much as you want to. There is no shortage of money in the world, and there is no shortage of success in the world either.

One being successful doesn’t mean you can’t be. One being rich doesn’t mean you can’t be.

2. You can start to make money relatively quickly

As you have an online business, you are instantly open to receive money. All you need is a website and a product or a service to sell to your customers.

That is the beauty of blogs and online business (these two being pretty much synonym these days). You are quick and you can also grow as quickly as you want to. I made money as soon as I launched my first product, your online business can be that powerful.

I knew this was possible but I had to see it myself and as soon as the first sales came in (right after my first product launch). I knew this was it. I’m all in on blogging.

3. Work from anywhere and design your days

It’s not a myth that bloggers work from where ever they want to. They can take a trip to another country and still be able to work from there as efficiently as from anywhere.

As a blogger, you can work from home and have all the comfort in your life. You don’t have to wake up early in the morning just to get to that bus or train. Or to drive that 30 minutes to your work to do that same dull job of yours.

On top of being in total control of the place, you work from, you can also choose when you work and how. There’s no one behind your back watching that you do this or that. You can work as much as you want and also as little as you want. However, you want to work more than there are hours in a day when you are working toward your dream business.

4. It's so much fun

When you are building your blogging business, you are not even thinking about the time and hours spent. They just fly by as you are enjoying it that much. You are also willing to work more than is considered reasonable.

Why you might ask. Well, the thing is that when you are building and growing something of your own. It doesn’t feel like work. It’s not a hobby either. We are building a business here, and the feeling it brings is pure joy.

The moment you open your WordPress and start creating content, you feel like you are in a state of flow. You want to develop and create everything and anything and on a massive scale. You are building your future here, and it’s exciting.

5. It's damn inexpensive to start

Starting your own online business is damn inexpensive, you can literally start as low as $3.95/month with this special Bluehost link.

Seriously though it’s so easy to start your very own blog. You set up a domain and a website, and off you go. That’s all you need in the beginning.

I honestly don’t see any reason why one wouldn’t want to start an online business. It costs almost nothing, and you can gain anything.

Starting my own blogging business was the best decision I have ever made. I can do anything with it, and I can develop it to any heights imaginable. I have no limits and everything to gain. The excitement to build your own business is immense.

Bonus

You might be thinking that I’m special or unique, but the truth is, I’m not. There’s nothing special about me, except me being determined to succeed in life. And you should have this mentality too. You want success for yourself so do something about it.

You can do it. I’m doing it! Why not you too. Trust yourself, and if you are on the fence of things, trust me then. Building an online business is fun, and the whole world is open for you. You just have to grab the chance and go for it.

It will catch you if you try your very best. You are an entrepreneur at heart and want to build a destiny for yourself and not let others determine it for you.

Starting a blog and an online business was one of the best decisions I have ever made. I’m doing something great for myself and providing value to others. It’s a win-win situation.

You can do this too, and I’m here to help you build your very own online business from scratch!

What to blog?

Selecting a niche and a business name

When you are starting your blog, selecting a proper name and niche are the things people wonder the most.

What should you name your blog and what is the market you should go for? These two things we will tackle in this chapter.

How to choose your niche

If you are not familiar with the term niche, it basically means what is the area you are selling your products and services in. What is the thing your business is working at? What is the market you are working on? What are you blogging about?

Go for a market that is filled with money

Now, this is crucial. Believe me; you do not want to start a business that has no or little money involved. You want the market to be a hot one. So how do you know if something is hot or not?

There are only three core HOT markets out there:

  • Health
  • Wealth
  • Relationships

Those are the main markets you will start with. However, you do not choose to go for a wealth market and try to dominate that (not at the beginning at least). The market is too big, so you will go and choose a sub-market below them.

However, before that, you will have to choose what is the main market you are going for, health, wealth or relationships? Is health something that you like to talk about, are you possibly one of those who goes to the gym every day to exercise? Then health could be your thing.

You have to be passionate and energized by that topic. If you doubt your decision, step back and think again. You have to nail down this in order to keep up with it. Keep passionate about it.

Choosing your sub-market & niche

So when you have chosen your main market, it’s time to choose the sub-market from which you will choose the niche you will soon to be dominating.

For example, if your main market is health, sub-market could be food.

Then you want to niche down from there.
Health – Food – Organic food

Then niche down again
Health – Food – Organic food – Organic food for the new moms

See, this is the path you need to take in order to figure out your niche and how to make money from the thing you know the best or the most about.

The more you niche down, the smaller the group of people you need to reach. If you think that it will hinder your chances of making money, it’s actually the opposite. The more money you will make the more niched down you are.

Why? The reason is that you are talking exactly to a certain set of group and that means that they are more inclined to believe you rather than someone else who is speaking more generally about the topic than you are.

However, you have to take into account that going too niche will also make your earnings limited. So you have to find a good balance between your passion and where the money is.

Remember you can always climb up from the niche you are working in.

Examples of successful online businesses that are niched down:

Wealth

Money management – The Savvy Couple
Digital marketing/blogging – Smart Passive Income

Health

Fitness – Fit Bottomed Girls
Bikini Fitness – Kayla Itsines
Food – Serious Eats

Relationships

Family life etc. – Living Well Spending Less
Dating Blog – Luvze

The following blogs and online businesses are all very successful and behind every one of those is a person who wanted to build something great for him/herself.

Choose a niche that resonates with you. Something you know a lot about or something you feel passionate about or that is bringing you energy. The main point is that you start now. Not tomorrow, not next weekend, you start now. Don’t waste your precious time anymore.

Organize your website and blog

Download this free tool right now to create yourself a structure to your blog and business. After all, there has to be a structure to your doing, so download this tool to help you with the structuring.

I have used it, and it has helped me immensely. Even though it is simple as can be. It is something you need.

It’s great to see how all topics and sub-topics fit together.

I’m liking this tool a lot.

Choosing the name for your business

I remember when I was deciding the name for my business. It was exciting and stressful at the same time. I wanted something new but still, something that was connected to me. Naming this particular blog was pretty straightforward, as I’m building a personal brand, using my own name was the only choice.

But after all these years on being on business. I can say that the name doesn’t matter that much.

You see, people will visit your site regardless of the name. If it’s appropriate that is.

The reason people will visit your site is because of you and because you are helping them. Not because your domain name was super cool or something. It is the content and help you are providing for your visitors.

If you are unsure where to start with the naming thing. Think about the business you want to be in. It was the niche part we talked about.

If you want to go for more of a general approach I recommend naming your business to your own name. Or a variant of your first or last name. The main point is that you don’t take too much time with it.

What you should keep in mind is that you make sure the name of your choice is available.

You can use Bluehost or GoDaddy to find this for you. Just type the name you wish to use as your website address and see if it’s available. Remember you need the .com address for yourself.

Few routes to take:

  • Your personal name like juhaekman.com
  • A name that suggests what your online business or a blog is all about

Personal branding vs. Business name

With personal branding, you can build anything and add anything under your name. That is the most significant benefit personal branding has. The con is that you have to explain what your site is all about for the first time users.

Business name, for example, smartpassiveincome.com already tells what the site is all about. You don’t have to explain what it is that you write about. However, the con here is that you are somewhat limited to that specific topic.

When I was thinking about the pros and cons of naming, I decided to have the freedom of adding things under my name and so I chose personal branding. However, if you are confident that you will be writing about fitness and fitness only. Then you should probably go for a name that suggests that.

A final note!

The name you choose for your business is not the thing that determines the success of your business. Neither is the niche you select for yourself so don’t stress too much about these.

Once you have decided your niche and name, it’s time to set up your website.

Start your blog

Set up your website and domain

In this chapter, we go through the domain name and hosting service part of blogging. Just to be honest from the get-go, this process will cost around $60-$70/year, so be prepared for that. However, I would say that this is a very small investment considering the limitless earning potential you have after that.

Things might still seem too complicated but trust me the process is very straightforward and requires zero knowledge as I will be guiding you through the process step-by-step.

Let’s start by you clicking the link below to activate my special offer to you. You will get an awesome deal of just $3.95/month when you go through that link.

Selecting your hosting plan

First, you have to select a hosting plan for yourself and trust me, you want to select the cheapest one as you are just starting out.

You don’t need all the bells and whistles at the beginning so just go for the cheapest one, you can upgrade later when your business starts to shine.

Select the basic one as it has the $3.95/month offer in it.

What is hosting and domain?

Hosting as the name refers, hosts your website. It is the place where your website resides in. A domain is the same as your website address.

Hosting is like a house and domains are like people living inside the house. Think of that way.

Registering your domain name

Next up is the moment where you insert that website name you chose and decided previously. This is the moment where you will decide where you will help your customers. My suggestion is to buy the domain name from godaddy.com and hosting as a separate.

You can check the availability your name choice with this tool:

Go for the .com as it is the norm and seen as the professional way to go.

Create your hosting account

Here you will fill your personal information and set-up your hosting account. These will be needed for your hosting plan and won’t be the same as WordPress login information. Something I was confused with when I was setting up my first site.

Choosing your services and account plan

As mentioned before we go for the “cheapest” route and that is selecting the option where you only pay for one year. You also have the option to go for the 3-year plan that will give you the $3.95/month but you do not want to do that.

You want to have the option of changing your host down the road and so the best option is to go for the cheapest one, which won’t be cheapest regarding monthly costs but it is the cheapest one considering the commitment to a hosting company.

You might be confused but the thing is that you are just starting out and everything is new. So you have to invest your money wisely.

Choose a one year plan and upgrade later if necessary. You don’t want to sign-up for the three-year plan only to realize later that this hosting company wasn’t for you. Bluehost is by no means a bad hosting company. I consider it to be the best one when starting out. Honestly.

Welcome to Bluehost

After all is good and you have decided on the plan, you will create a password for the hosting account. Just click the Create your password button to go forward.

You will be introduced to a screen where you will just create your password. I use a software called KeePass to keep all my passwords and usernames in one place. I would be in total chaos without that little software. I strongly suggest you get that to yourself. It is useful to have one place that collects every username and password you have.

After you have created your password you are able to log in to your hosting account.

Installing WordPress: Your future online business success

Once logged in, you will start the WordPress installation. Choose a theme for your website. Remember at this point it’s not so critical which theme you select.

However, if I were you I would go for the OceanWP. If you don’t see that in the list you can change your theme later on. So no need to stress about this too much.

When everything is done you will get to this kind of screen. Just click the Start Building button to access your very own WordPress website.

Your online business HQ for success

This is what it looks like when you are logged in to your WordPress site. There’s almost limitless potential and opportunities to offer to you and to your online business.

You might still be overwhelmed with everything but be at ease. This is the first step in your damn awesome business. You are now in an awesome position to start making money.

You have your very own website and you have a place you can direct your customers to.

Desing your blog (code free)

How to design your blog to make it look professional

Start designing your website

Now that you have your website up and running, it’s time make it look yours. Designing a website is one of the most satisfying experiences and things you can do in your online business.

Think of your website as something of an invitation. If your invitation looks unprofessional, no one will come to your door and see what’s inside. Your site has to look professional and good all around.

No coding required

I remember when I was in the business school, I was thought coding, HTML, Javascript and much more. Just guess, do I remember anything of that. Nope. Yes, I can somewhat understand code, but I sure can’t write it.

Thankfully I don’t have to write a single line of code when I’m building my website, and it’s all thanks to Elementor Pro.

Elementor Pro is so intuitive to use and so easy that it’s a pure joy to use it. And on top of that, you can create pretty much anything with it.

Designing my website

I was so confused when I first started using WordPress and how to design my website. That was until I tried out Elementor Pro and everything changed. I didn’t have to learn to code or anything.

Now that I think about it and how Wix.com was once the hosting company for my domain. I can only hit myself for ever going down that route. Don’t make the same mistake as I did. Don’t buy WIX based website for yourself. Yes, they are good for some degree but not when you are building a real online business.

You don’t want to be limited in any way, and that’s why WordPress + Elementor Pro is such a good fit for your business. No limitations. Zero.

Believe it or not, I have built my blogging site and businesses with WordPress and Elementor Pro. The combination is so good that it’s almost unreal. You can do anything and the best part is that Elementor Pro is constantly updated and developed by professionals.

You can also check the extensive library of Elementor tutorials here if you want to.

It's your business

You want your site to look as good as possible. It is your business after all, and you want it to look professional. With the resources I’m providing for you, you don’t have to spend ages designing your website for success.

If you have any questions, send me an email, and I’ll try my best to answer your questions as soon as possible.
